Abstract
844,643. Controlling liquid levels. FRANKMANN, H. May 20, 1958 [June 22, 1957; Nov. 6, 1957], Nos. 19716/57 and 34559/57. Class 123(1) A liquid-level maintenance device, especially for the oil sump of an I.C. engine, has a reservoir 16 and a container 12 with a float-controlled valve assembly therebetween. The flow between the float-chamber 10 of said assembly and the container 12 is restricted so that the level in the former coincides with the mean working level 15 in the latter. The liquid is conveyed from the reservoir by a pipe 17 connected to the float-chamber which has a float 11 therein adapted to actuate a ball-valve to regulate the supply. In the event of the supply failing the float lowers into engagement with electrical contacts to effect a warning. The valve assembly may be connected to the side of the container 12 by a pipe 13 or to the base by a pipe 13a and may be provided with a breather vent 10a, a slotted bracket 19 which allows vertical adjustment and level indicator windows. The valve may be actuated by a solenoid and the static liquid level is indicated by the reference numeral 18. In a modification, the valve 20, Fig. 2, is double-acting having a lower seating 21 and an upper seating 22. The raising of the level in the sump causes the float to rise and cut-off the supply.
