Abstract

Paper is dyed at any stage in its process of manufacture with one or more water-soluble mono- or poly-basic acid salts of aminomethylphthalocyanines of the formula: <FORM:0844338/IV (c)/1> wherein Pc represents a substituted or unsubstituted stable metal phthalocyanine or naphthalocyanine radical, R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic radical containing not more than 6 carbon atoms, R2 represents an aliphatic radical containing not more than 6 carbon atoms, or R1 and R2 together with the nitrogen atom may form a heterocyclic ring containing, if desired, other hetero atoms, and n is a whole number not less than 2 and not greater than 8. Specified aliphatic radicals R1 and R2 are methyl, ethyl, n-propyl-, allyl, b -hydroxyethyl, b -hydroxy-propyl, a -methyl-b -hydroxypropyl, b -hydroxy-nbutyl, a -methyl-b -hydroxyethyl-propyl and a -ethyl-b -hydroxyethyl, and when they are part of a heterocyclic ring, such rings are piperidine, morpholine and pyrrolidine. Specified phthalocyanine or naphthalocyanine radicals are nickel phthalocyanine, nickel tetraphenyl phthalocyanine, cobalt phthalocyanine, copper phthalocyanine, copper 1 : 2-naphthalocyanine, copper 2 : 3-naphthalocyanine, copper halogenophthalocyanines, copper arylphthalocyanines, copper arylmercaptophthalocyanines and copper aralkylphthalocyanines. Specified acids from which the salts are formed are hydrochloric, phosphoric, sulphuric, acetic, benzoic, terephthalic, succinic, benzene sulphonic, p-toluene-sulphonic, naphthalene a - and b -sulphonic, maleic, fumaric, citric, tartaric, adipic and oxalic acids. The dyes may be applied to the paper pulp or to the finished paper. The phthalocyanines of the above formula may be obtained by chloromethylating a phthalocyanine by, for example, the process of Specification 586,340 or 689,153, and subsequently treating with an amine <FORM:0844338/IV (c)/2> , the salts then being prepared by dissolving the compound so-prepared in an aqueous solution of the acid, followed by concentration and isolation. Numerous examples of dyeing and numerous phthalocyanines of the above formula are given.
