Abstract
A polymer of ethylene sulphite <FORM:0844104/IV(a)/1> is prepared by maintaining ethylene oxide and sulphur dioxide or the adduct of formula C2H4O,SO2 in contact with an amine catalyst in a medium of ethylene sulphite. Preferably about equal weights of the ethylene sulphite and the sum of the weights of the reactants, or the adduct, are used at about atmospheric temperature. Some polymer is preferably present in the initial medium. The exothermic reaction may be controlled by immersing the reaction vessel in water which is allowed to warm up spontaneously as the reaction proceeds. The adduct which volatalises during both polymerization and depolymerization may be absorbed in ethylene sulphite and the mixture used in another run. Diethylaniline and pyridine are specified catalysts.ALSO:Ethylene sulphite <FORM:0844104/IV(b)/1> is prepared by maintaining ethylene oxide and sulphur dioxide or the adduct of formula C2H4O,SO2 in contact with an amine catalyst in a medium of ethylene sulphite to produce a polymer, thereafter heating the mixture to a temperature above 140 DEG C. to produce ethylene sulphite and separating the ethylene sulphite by distillation. The adduct which volatalises during both polymerisation and depolymerisation may be absorbed in ethylene sulphite and the mixture used in another run. Diethylaniline and pyridine are specified catalysts.
