Abstract
844,043. Radio receiving circuits; transistor receiving circuits. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 5, 1959 [March 8, 1958], No. 7689/59. Classes 40(5) and 40(6). A radio receiver comprises a transistor frequency-changer 1 coupled by I.F. transformer 5 to transistor I.F. amplifier 2, which also functions as the local oscillator, the collector and emitter being back-coupled via circuit 3 tuned to the local oscillator frequency. A gain control voltage is applied to the base of transistor 2 from terminal 7, which produces an amplified voltage across resistor 8 in the collector circuit. This is used to vary the impedance of a diode 4, acting as a non-linear resistor, over which the local oscillator voltage is applied to the emitter circuit 9 of the frequency-changer 1, and so enhances the variation in gain. The arrangement may also be used with thermionic valves, in which case the diode 4 is replaced by a non- linear resistor of the ceramic type.
