The working stroke of a machine tool is maintained at a constant speed by discharge regulator 25, except when cylinder 2 has moved to such a position that cam follower 31 rides over cam face 33, which causes valve 26 to open and allow liquid to exhaust freely. At the end of the stroke, lever 18 of reversing valve 15 is knocked over by bracket 29 on the cylinder. The return stroke is effected at high speed, since valve 26 has no resistance to pressure liquid from the pump, and liquid from chamber 4 of the cylinder may exhaust freely.
