Abstract
843,504. Disc brakes. LAMBERT BRAKE CORPORATION. Aug. 26, 1957 [Nov. 20, 1956], No. 26808/57. Class 103 (1). In a multi-disc brake, means is provided for restraining the spring-release means against lateral displacement. In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 2, a multi-disc brake assembly 5 is mounted as a unit on a non-rotatable axle 2 of a vehicle and retained thereon by a nut 6. The brake assembly includes an interiorlysplined torque hub 8 which is slidable on splines 9 formed on axle shaft 2; the torque hub 8 having secured thereto a torque plate 10 and a secondary plate 12. Interposed. between torque plate 10 and the secondary plate 12 is an axially movable primary actuator disc 14, a plurality of axially slidable discs 15 rotatable with wheel 1 and a plurality of axially slidable intermediate discs 18 splined to non-rotatable torque hub 8. The outboard end of the torque hub 8 is provided with a plurality of lugs 20 on which is slidably mounted an axially slidable spring retaining ring 21; a plurality of returnspring mechanisms 26, 28 being provided between the latter and the secondary plate or disc 12 for urging the primary actuator disc 14 to its inoperative position whereby the discs 15, 18 are no longer in frictional contact. Lugs 20 prevent angular movement of the springs during operation of the brake. The discs are provided with sintered metal linings and the primary disc 14 and secondary disc 12 are provided with facing segments 31, 32 respectively provided with sintered metallic linings 33. The brake is applied by means of hydraulic fluid under pressure being admitted into annular piston chamber 39 in torque plate 10 to force angular piston 41 into engagement with axially slidable primary actuator disc 14, through the intermediary of insulating ring 42, to compress the sets of discs and retard the wheel 1. A self-energizing action is created by means of ball and ramp mechanisms 36, 37, 38 after initial hydraulic actuation has taken place. Adjusting devices may be provided as at 47 to permit adjustment for wear of the friction linings. A modification is disclosed in the Specification where the individual return spring mechanisms 26, 28 are replaced by a single " Belleville " spring coaxially mounted on a modified torque hub 8.
