Abstract

A metal mould particularly for moulding natural and synthetic rubbers and resins has a moulding surface of porous metal at least part of which is impregnated with a non-adhesive non-metallic porous material with a non-adhesive non-metallic porous material. The mould may be of aluminium, iron, or stainless steel having a porous metal moulding surface provided by sintering or electro-chemical treatment. The porous metal surface is impregnated with a solution or dispersion of a natural or synthetic polymer and/or resin such as polytetrafluoroethylene, polytrifluoromonochloroethylene, or a silicone or silicones, or a mixture thereof, and heated to dry the impregnant and to sinter it to form a porous mass. The solution or dispersion may contain a blowing agent such as ammonium nitrate or chloride, urea, or a polyacrylate. The porosity of the sintered mass may also be improved if the mould is used before the application of the solution or dispersion for the moulding of a carbonisable natural or synthetic rubber or resin, the deposits of which in the pores of the metal are carbonised during the subsequent-heat treatment.
