Abstract

Vinyl chloride is polymerised by means of a catalyst comprising a silver salt (e.g. AgNO3) and an antimony trialkyl (e.g. tri-n-propyl). The polymerization may be effected in bulk, or a inert organic or aqueous media; in the example, methanol is present. Preferred features are:-(a) the catalyst mixture is 0,5-3% wt. of monomer; (b) the silver salt is 25-50% wt. of the antimony trialkyl; (c) polymerization is effected at below room temperature and at atmospheric pressure.ALSO:A vinyl chloride polymerization catalyst comprises a silver salt and an antimony trialkyl, optionally in inert organic or aqueous media; the example specifies silver nitrate and antimony tri-n-propyl, methanol being present.
