Abstract

A hydrocarbon fuel oil contains 0.005 to 5% by weight of a compound of formula: <FORM:0842541/III/1> where X is oxygen or sulphur and R1 and R2 are hydrogen, aryl or a C2 to C24 alkyl radical, R3 is hydrogen, aryl or a C1 to C4 alkyl radical not more than two of R1, R2 and R3 being hydrogen, and 0.005 to 5% by weight of a detergent. The phosphorus compound may be tributyl phosphate, dodecyl phosphoric acid, dilauryl phosphoric acid, ethyl dilauryl phosphate, tricresyl, triphenyl and trixylenyl phosphates, diphenyl cresyl and dicresyl phenyl phosphates, ethyl diphenyl and dibutyl phenyl phosphates; or the corresponding thiophosphates. The detergent may be a metal salt of a petroleum sulphonic acid or aryl/alkyl sulphonic acid; an alkylated aromatic acid or phenol; a salt of an alkyl phenol sulphide; a copolymer of N-vinyl pyrrolidone, maleic anhydride, an alkoxylated partial ester of an unsaturated acid, or an ester of an alkoxylated alcohol, with an ester of an unsaturated mono-or di-carboxylic acid; a polymer or copolymer of an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid; a copolymer of a methacrylate ester with an amino alcohol; an amine salt of a naphthenic, sulphonic or fatty acid; or the reaction product of an alkylene oxide with the reaction product of a hydrocarbon and a phosphorus sulphide. The fuel oil may be a gas oil, diesel oil, residual oil or furnace oil. In examples gas oil contains dilaurophosphoric acid, tricresyl phosphate, calcium petroleum sulphonate, and a copolymer of C9 monoester of triethoxy maleic acid, C9 oxo alcohol maleo-fumarate, C16/C17 oxo alcohol maleo-fumarates and vinyl acetate.
