Abstract
Polymers consisting of at least 85% of acrylonitrile are dissolved in aqueous zinc halide solutions by a process which comprises acidifying the zinc halide solution with a watersoluble non-oxidising acid which forms only colourless and water-soluble salts with the cations present in the solution, the amount of acid being such as to reduce the pH of the solution to a value of a solution in water of the zinc halide at the same concentration, the reduce pH value not exceeding 4,0, and thereafter using the so-acidified solution as the solvent for the polymer, for example by polymerizing acrylointrile with the aid of potassium persulphate or hydrogen peroxide whilst dissolved in the solvent medium. Acids specified are hydrogen halides and sulphuric, phosphoric, formic, acetic, chloroacetic, lactic, butyric and citric acids. The solvent solutions may contain salts such as calcium andmagnesium chlorides in addition to the zinc halide, which is preferably zinc chloride.
