Abstract

<PICT:0841695/III/1> A crystalline synthetic zeolite, designated zeolite KG, of formula: 0.9-1.1 K2O : Al2O3 : 2.3-4.25 SiO2 : 2.6-4.6 H2O, identifiable by a characteristic X-ray diffraction pattern, is prepared by holding a gel having a composition K2O : Al2O3 : nSiO2 in the presence o aqueous potassium hydroxide at a temperature falling within the shaded area of the Figure corresponding to the n value of the gel. The zeolite so prepared may be contacted with aqueous solutions of Na, Li, Cs, Rb, or Cd ions which replace the potassium in the above formula. The zeolite may be partially dehydrated and used as an adsorbent for polar molecules, particularly water, carbon dioxide and ammonia. According to an example, a gel of formula K2O : Al2O3 : 3 SiO2 formed fro potassium hydroxide, silicic acid and aluminium hydroxide, was dried and mixed with aqueous KOH to form a gel 2.5 K2O : Al2O3 : 3 SiO2 which, in the presence of excess KOH, was autoclaved at 150 DEG C. for 3 days. The crystalline product analysed 0.92 K2O : Al2O3 : 2.3 SiO2 : 3.4 H2O.
