Abstract

A catalyst or a carrier is made by mixing silica or metal oxide with a thermoplast a binder, shaping the mixture and heating to decompose the thermoplast. Metal oxides specified are Al, Zn, Ni, Ti, W, Cu, Cr, Fe, or carbonates of these yielding oxides on heating. Thermoplasts specified are polymers of vinyl compounds, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, alcohol or acetate, styrene, acrylic acid ester, or acrylonitrile, and these may be incorporated in the form of an aqueous dispersion. The shaped product may be heated to a temperature sufficient to carbonize the thermoplast, or at a higher temperature to form carbon, or the carbon may be burnt out and the inorganic support partly sintered. In examples, kieselguhr, titanium oxide, or a mixture of iron oxide and hydrated titanium dioxide, is mixed with an aqueous dispersion of polyvinyl acetate or chloride; the mixture is pressed and dried. The resulting powder is formed into tablets which are heated at 700 DEG to 800 DEG C. in an inert gas, e.g. CO2 or N. Alternatively they are ignited in a current of air or oxygen, followed if desired by heating in air at 1000 DEG C. or more. The tablets may be then impregnated with metal or other compounds as catalysts, e.g. phosphoric acid, salts of W, V, or Cr.
