Abstract
839,611. Calenders. FARREL-BIRMINGHAM CO. Inc. June 27, 1958 [Jan. 9, 1958], No. 20659/58. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups VIII and XXII] A calender &c. comprises a pair of co-operating rolls rotatably supported in spaced end stands having roll journal bearing casings therein and means within these casings operable to move the journal members laterally to effect a non-parallel relationship between the axes of the rolls to provide a desired amount of crown to the rolls. At each end of each roll 13, 14, a roll neck 16 extends into a bearing member 18, the lower bearing being supported by a casting 19 which is slidably mounted in a window 12 and adjustable vertically by a screw 21 actuated by worm gearing. A journal bearing 26 is mounted in the casting 19 and is horizontally movable on ball bearings 29 by a pair of oppositely internally threaded worm wheels 30, 31 rotatably mounted in seats 30a, 31a in the casting and screwed on to threaded blocks 34, 35 each of which fits closely against a face 38, 39 on a side 40, 41 of the journal bearing. In operation each worm wheel 30, 31 is rotated by a worm 43, 44 on a shaft 45, 46 the shafts being interconnected by a cross shaft and bevel gearing and mounted in the casting 19 at one end of the roll 14 and driven by a motor 47 through a flexible coupling. Similar worm gearing and shafting is provided at the other end of the roll 14 and is connected to the shaft 45 by a shaft having a flexible coupling at each end. In a modified form, Fig. 9, only one worm wheel 31 is provided on the journal bearing and the bearing movement is opposed by a hydraulically pressurised piston 35a which is moved towards the closed end of a cylinder 58 as the bearing 26 is moved from the normal position. In another form, the bearing 26 may be moved by fluid pressure on both sides. One of the rolls 13, 14 may drive the other through gearing, the gear 66 having internal rounded teeth 71 which engage rounded teeth 70 on a collar keyed to the neck of the roll 14 to provide a swivel connection between the gear and the roll.
