Abstract

839,441. Cutting apparatus. TIMSON, E. A. Oct. 28, 1958 [Oct. 30, 1957], No. 33885/57 Class 31 (1). Apparatus for cutting a travelling web W of paper &c. along a transverse line disposed at a desired angle with respect to the longitudinal edges of the web comprises a cutting blade 2 mounted in a carrier 1 secured to an endless chain 3 passed round sprockets 4, 5, the sprocket spindles 6, 7 being mounted in a sub-frame 8 which extends obliquely across frame members F, the inclination of the sub-frame, which is movable pivotally about the axis of the spindle 7, being adjustable by means of a manually operable screw 9 engageable with a nut 9<SP>1</SP> combined with the sub-frame structure and mounted in an element 9a arranged to swivel on the main framework of the machine. The chain 3 is driven unidirectionally to traverse the cutter in one direction A to cut the web and then in the opposite direction B to return the cutter to its starting position. During the cutting operation, the point 2a of the cutting blade is arranged to enter a groove or channel 11 between abutment bars 10 or a groove in a single abutment member. The cutting blade may be arranged below the surface of the travelling web.
