Abstract

839,137. Air cushions. DE FRIES, B. Dec. 31, 1958 [Oct. 31, 1957], No. 33988/57. Class 52(4) In an air cushion arrangement for vehicle seats &c., a seat cushion comprises an airtight rubber bag 11 enclosing a foam latex cellular cushion 12 and is connected by tubes 13 to a back cushion comprising an airtight bag 14 supported by hooks 15 fitting over the back of the vehicle seat 10 and connected to the bag 14 by straps 16. Normally cushion 14 is collapsed but the weight of the sitter causes it to be inflated by air expelled from bag 11. When the seat cushion is unloaded the resilience of the foam rubber expands bag 11 and withdraws air from the cushion 14. In a modification (Fig. 2) the cushions are built into a vehicle seat and comprise an airtight bag 17 expanded by coil springs 18 between a rigid base 19 and foam latex surface 20 with tubes 21 leading to back cushion 22. A cock may be fitted in one of the tubes 13 or 21 to control as desired the air passing from one cushion to another.
