A linear measuring scale bears additional scales graduated so as to indicate the numbers of stitches or rows of knitting required to produce a given length, the several scales corresponding to different numbers of stitches or rows per unit length. As shown, the scales are marked on a tape 7 wound on a reel 10 enclosed in a two-part housing 1, 2. The reel has end discs 11, 12, one of which is integral with a bearing-pin 13 while the other rotatably supports a bearing pin 14 which is held against rotation relative to the housing. Rubber bands stretched between radial pins 19, 20 thus urge the reel to rotate so as to wind up the measuring-tape. A spring- loaded brake 27 may be released by a lever 32. The tape passes through a beak-like extension 3,4 of the housing which is marked with the numbers of stitches or rows per unit length (actually 5 cms.), these identifying the scales on the tape. The scale to be used is determined by counting the number of stitches or rows in a sample of knitting appearing through a window of the unit length formed in the end of the tape. An endless band 23 passing over rollers 24 is then set so that a window 25 therein exposes the appropriate scale. An arrow 26 indicates the reading-point. Further scales covering a further range of numbers of stitches or rows per unit length may be marked on the reverse side of the tape. The device may alternatively be constructed of folding rigid sections.
