Abstract

838,833. Well boring. KAMMERER, A. W. Aug. 25, 1958, No. 27201/58. Class 85 In a rotary drill bit of the expansible type, for enlarging the well bore below a well casing, the cutters are of unequal cutting lengths so that, although they can be collapsed within the confines of the well casing, when they are expanded the enlarged bore produced is of greater diameter than would be the case if cutters of equal length were used. The invention is shown as applied to the drill bit described in Specification 766,242, two cutters 61 and one cutter 61a being journalled on pins 60 projecting from the cam-actuated arms 36, 36a. When the arms are fully expanded by fluid pressure as in Specification 766,242, the cutters 61 leave an inner ridge H, on the formation shoulder C, which is immediately removed by the longer cutter 61a.
