Abstract
The invention comprises 3-hydroxy-7,11-dimethyl - 3 - phenyl - 6,10 - dodecadienoic acid, alkali metal and alkaline-earth metal salts thereof, and a process for the preparation thereof which comprises reacting 5,9-dimethyl-1 - phenyl - 4,8 - decadien - 1 - one with an a -halo-acetate in the presence of zinc and saponifying the ester thus formed to the corresponding salt, which is then hydrolysed to the free acid. Said 5,9 - dimethyl 1 - phenyl - 4,8 - decadien-1-one is obtained by reacting a geranyl halide with a C1-5 alkyl benzoyl acetate in the presence of a compound capable of converting the keto ester to a metallo derivative to form an a -geranylbenzoyl acetate, converting this to a salt with a base, and then reacting the salt with an acid. In the reaction between geranyl halide and lower alkyl benzoyl acetate, metallic sodium, sodium hydride or sodium alcoholate may be employed. As base Ba(OH)2, sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide are suitable. Examples describe the preparation of 3-hydroxy-3 - phenyl - 7,11 - dimethyl - 6,10 - dodecadienoate, and the sodium and calcium salts thereof.
