Abstract

[Also in Groups XVIII and XXIX] A device for withdrawing liquid from a container comprises a tubular member 1 e.g. of polythene slidable in a sleeve 22 or other sealing member mounted in an aperture in the container within limits determined by spaced abutments 2, 3, a liquid outlet port 14 in the longitudinal wall of the tubular member, an air reservoir 5 located within the member 1 and provided with air inlet and outlet ports 6, 8<SP>1</SP> respectively, and a manually-operable valve 10 controlling a liquid inlet port to the tubular member. The liquid outlet and air inlet ports 6, 14 are obscured by the rubber or other sleeve 22 when the member 1 is pushed inwardly up to the abutment 3 so that liquid cannot leave the container and air cannot enter it. On withdrawing the tubular member, any liquid within it passes out through the port 14. As shown in Fig. 1, the valve 10 controls a liquid inlet port defined by the valve seat 9 and is operated by a spring-loaded stem 18 of polythene carrying a rubber sealing collar 19 and a push button 21. The valve carries guide segments 11, 12. The air outlet port 8<SP>1</SP> is smaller than the air inlet port 6 and the reservoir 5 is of inverted V-shape. Additional liquid inlet ports 15, 17 which are open to the inside of the container when the tubular member is pressed home are also provided. A fixed volume of liquid is discharged each time the tubular member is moved in and out. To obtain a continuous discharge, the valve 10 is held open by the push button 21 when the tubular member is in its outer position. In a further modification by which a metered quantity or a continuous stream may be dispensed, the tubular member comprises two coaxial metal tubes sealed at their ends to form an annular air reservoir. An air outlet aperture is provided at the inner ends of the tubes adjacent a seat for a manually operable valve such as 10, Fig. 1. The liquid outlet and air inlet ports are arranged coaxially in the side walls of the respective tubes. Specification 718,897 is referred to.
