Abstract

838,319. Moulding apparatus. REED. PRENTICE CORPORATION. Oct. 9, 1957, No. 31532/57. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups II, XXII and XXIII] In apparatus for plasticizing solid particulate material for use in extrusion, injection or other moulding apparatus, a hopper 12 introduces the material into a barrel 25 which is heated to fuse the material and contains a rotatable screw 22, this screw having upper convolutions 34 to feed the material downwardly and lower convolutions 35 to feed it upwardly so that the material is kneaded and folded upon itself, and discharged through a passage 28. The material may be finely-divided glass, a rubber compound, lead, tin, zinc, or a plastic. As shown, the invention is applied to an extrusion moulding machine having an extrusion die 14. The extruded rod or strip passes through an elongated water trough, Fig. 1 (not shown), and between rollers, the lower of which is driven. Cooling water is circulated through the trough. The extruder is provided with heating elements 30 ... 33. A cap member 42 threaded into the upper end of the feed screw has vanes 45 to agitate the material in the hopper 12. Air under pressure may be passed through a tube 51 into the interior of the feed screw 22 where it becomes heated. The heated air escapes through a bore 47 in the cap 42 leading to outlet passages 48 in the cap and pre-heats material in the hopper 12. The barrel 25 is surrounded by a casing 54. The hopper 12 comprises two annular members 55, 56, and is heated by convection currents passing through openings 75, 61 and 62. The extruder 11 is releasably secured to a housing 10 by pivotal clamping levers, Fig. 3 (not shown).
