A planetary gear system is braked by means of a band 19 to a point near the middle of which there is secured a rod 9 coupled to a piston reciprocable in a cylinder 6. As a result of friction between the band 19 and central wheel 18, the movement of the band causes the piston 3 to cover ports 10 in the cylinders so that flow of oil from a pump 11 is prevented from escaping and the pressure acting against pistons 1 and 2 in main actuator cylinders 4 and 5 is increased, thus causing a torque which balances the torque on the central wheel.
