In making a variable transformer of the kind wherein a winding 2 is directly engaged by a contact roller 4, a. contact track is formed by removing insulation at 5 between the winding turns with a rotary wire brush so as to provide a track of corrugated form. The brushing may also remove insulation from the winding wire. The track may be straight or circular.
