Abstract
838,038. Jet propulsion nozzles. BOEING AIRPLANE CO. May 29, 1958 [Aug. 20, 1957], No. 17197/58. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXXIII] The duct leading to the nozzle of a jet propulsion engine and the nozzle itself are formed by the interior wall of a housing 9, Fig. 2 (part radial section) which, going downstream, first diverges and then converges, and by a bulbous plug 1 axially slidable on a central tube 91 by an actuator 10. Normally, the plug is located so that its greatest diameter is in the region of the greatest diameter of the wall, to form a throat in the duct. The plug then covers a set of vanes 2 housed in recesses 97. The plug can be moved axially to vary the area of the throat and nozzle, and in the position shown exposes the vanes 2 which may be swung radially as shown by an acutator 21 to split up the jet stream for noise suppression. The vanes are channel-shaped, open downstream, so that ambient air can flow radially inwards along the channels and mix with the jet. The decrease in nozzle area caused by extending the vanes is compensated for by axial movement of plug 1.
