Abstract
A dye-receptive composition comprises a synthetic linear hydrophobic polymer in which is incorporated a cross-linked, water-insoluble vinyl lactam polymer. Specified hydrophobic polymers are polyamides, polyesters, polyolefines or acrylonitrile polymers. Specified vinyl lactam polymers are cross-linked polyvinyl pyrrolidone and copolymers of vinyl lactams and polyfunctional monomers, e.g. diethylene glycol bis allyl-carbonate, methylene-bis-acrylamide, divinyl benzene, diethylene glycol divinyl ether, diallyl phthalate, diallyl glycerol, triallyl cyanurate, trimethallyl isocyanurate, triacrylyl-perhydrotriazine, diallyl adipate, diallyl maleate, diallyl-fumarate, diallyl succinate, diallyl sorbitol, diallyl benzene phosphonate, diallyl pentaerythritol, ethylene diacrylate, allyl acrylate, allyl methacrylate, 2,4-diallyloxy - 6 - amino - s - triazine and 1,5-pentadiene. The vinyl lactam polymers may be blended into fibre-forming compositions before fabrication or by impregnation of shaped articles, e.g. fibres, in swollen or gel condition. The examples describe the preparation of the vinyl lactam polymers which are washed, dried and comminuted with aqueous zinc chloride to form dispersions, the dispersions being mixed with aqueous solutions of polyacrylonitrile, nylon 6-6 and polypropylene and wet spun into aqueous coagulants containing zinc chloride, and the impregnation of polyacrylonitrile fibres in swollen or gel condition. The resultant fibres may be dyed with organic dyestuffs, of which many are specified. U.S.A. Specification 2,831,836 is referred to.
