[Also in Group XXIX] In a starter turbine for operation by air or gas and adapted to develop maximum power at a relatively low fraction of the uncoupling speed, the mass flow is reduced progressively over a major portion of the starting cycle by means of a speed-responsive device. An engine starter turbine a is prevented from overspeeding by the use of pivotally mounted nozzle blades e which are turned towards the tangential direction by a toothed control ring f which is turned, through a pinion g and a lever h, by a piston i. The supply of motive fluid, such as compressed air, from the turbine inlet d to the piston i is controlled by a valve j operated by a centrifugal governor k. Alternatively, overspeeding may be prevented by varying the number of nozzles in use or varying the degree of masking of a fixed number of nozzles, or by varying a restriction upstream of the nozzles.
