Abstract
836,457. Diffusers for electric batteries. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. June 27, 1957 [June 28, 1956], No. 20247/57. Class 96. [Also in Group XXXVI] In making gas-permeable diffusers for electric batteries rendered operative by gas, an aqueous slurry comprising electrically non-conducting fibres and finely divided carbon and, preferably, also a finely divided metal oxide depolarizer, is stirred until the fibres are uniformly coated with carbon and rendered electrically conducting. The slurry is then cast or formed into paper-board on a paper-making machine, which paper-board is then cut up into diffusers of a desired size. The carbon may be acetylene and may include a small amount of activated carbon. The weight ratio of carbon to fibres may be between 2 : 1 and 1: 2. The fibres may be fibres of sulphite, sulphate, soda, hardwood or alpha - cellulose paper pulp, " Orion," " Dynel " (Registered Trade Marks), nylon, cotton, flax, wool, silk, asbestos and glass. Suitable depolarizers are cupric oxide, lead dioxide, manganese dioxide and vanadium pentoxide. The slurry may also comprise maize starch, 2,4,6-triamino-s-triazine resin or cyanurotriamide-formaldehyde resin, zinc chloride or potassium hydroxide, borate or tartrate, glyoxal, boric acid and tartaric acid.
