Abstract

3 - Sec. butyl - 4 - hydroxyacetophenone is prepared by the Friedel-Crafts acylation of o-sec.-butylphenol with acetyl chloride and aluminium chloride. 2-Acetyl-4-isopropylphenol and 2 - n - octanoyl - 4:5 - dimethylphenol are similarly prepared from p-isopropylphenol and 3; 4-dimethylphenol respectively. In each case the acyl groups are subjected to the Clemmenson reduction to give 2-sec.-butyl-4-ethylphenol, 2-ethyl - 4 - isopropylphenol and 2 - n - octyl-4; 5-dimethyl phenol respectively.
