Abstract
836,043. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. April 11, 1958 [April 17, 1957], No. 12618/57. Class 39(4). A support structure for fuel elements of a nuclear reactor comprises a nest of tubes having means holding them in face contact with one another on hexagonal sections in the tubes and the tubes intersecting with one another in other sections of greater area than the area of the hexagonal sections, the tubes having their centres corresponding with the corners of a symmetrical hexagonal lattice and arranged so that around any hexagon of the lattice tubes of greater length alternate with tubes of lesser length and arranged so that the tubes are fixed longitudinally to one another by their intersecting portions. Fig. 1 shows one of the long tubes 1 which is generally cylindrical but provided with six flat external faces 2 forming a regular hexagon, each face 2 having a central vertical slot. The tube 1 is provided with three equispaced shallow slots 4 and three equispaced deep slots 5 aligned above and below alternate faces 2. The short tubes, Fig. 2, each confines a cylindrical member 7 provided with six flat faces 8 each having a central vertical slot. The tube is provided with three equispaced slots 10 and three equispaced slots 11 aligned above and below alternate faces 8. As shown in Fig. 3 a long tube 1 and short tube 7 can engage one another with the portion 7a above slot 10 of the short tube engaging slot 4 of the long tube, and the portion 7b engaging slot 5. Thus an array of tubes can be built up with the long and short tubes alternating in hexagonal sections ; the array may be star shaped and the long tubes may extend between top and bottom plates provided with apertures to receive the tubes, the apertures preferably being slightly displaced from a symmetrical arrangement so that the tubes are bowed concave as seen from the centre. In use the tubes are charged with tubular fuel elements which are held in position by spaced bands of cooling fins provided on the fuel elements ; the concave bowing of the tubes prevents the fuel elements bowing convexly which would increase the reactivity of the core. Specification 813,131 is referred to.
