Abstract
835,854. Refining aluminium by electrolysis. ALUMINIUM-INDUSTRIE A.G. May 1, 1958 [May 2, 1957], No. 13950/58. Class 41. An electrolytic cell for refining aluminium by the three-layer process has at least two side channels 2, 2a, 2b, 2c filled with cathode metal for cathode current supply, the channels being so disposed that the lines extending from the geometrical centre O of the horizontal section of the cell containing the channels to the centres C, C<SP>1</SP> of the mouths of two of the channels intersect at an angle of from 90 to 180 degrees. The conditions are fulfilled in Fig. 3 by lines BO and OC or OC<SP>1</SP>, for example. The horizontal crosssection of the cell may be polygonal, elliptical or circular, in which case the channels may be radial or non-radial. Where the cross-section is rectangular, the channels may be perpendicular to the walls, as shown, or at some other angle, and are preferably distributed on three sides of the cell. Specification 813,942 is referred to.
