Abstract

834,807. Automatic lathes. ARON, E., and PULMAN, W. E. R. April 29, 1957 [May 3, 1956], No. 13667/56. Class 83 (3). A turret-operating mechanism for an automatic lathe &c. comprises a turret head rotatably mounted on a slide, with a cam-operated transmission for moving it along a fixed guideway, and a turret-indexing mechanism on the slide, the transmission including a member mounted on the turret slide and a connecting device to transmit a cyclic movement between the turret slide and said member on indexing, a resilient means being provided between an oscillatory member of the transmission and a fixed structure, urging the turret slide away from the machine spindle. Turret-slide 11, Fig. 1 (plan) carries a turret 10 indexible by a Geneva wheel 19 driven by a pin 23 attached to a bevel-wheel 24. The latter is driven from a long pinion 27, rotated on the operation of a one-revolution clutch by a high-speed shaft. This shaft is driven at constant speed and rotates the camshafts for feed movements through pick-off gears. A dog-disc driven by worm gearing from the constant speed shaft, trips the onerevolution clutches in the usual manner. The bevel-wheel 24 is secured to a shaft 21, the other end of which carries a crank-pin driving, during indexing, a connecting rod 34 secured to a member 51, Fig. 2, of a slide 52. The latter is movable relative to the turret slide in the direction of its movement, and carries a rack 12 engaging a quadrant 13 moved from the cam-shaft 16. The connecting rod is in the dead-centre position during feed movements by the quadrant, but during turret-indexing the rack is held against movement by the quadrant, and the connecting rod withdraws the turret clear of the work so that it may be indexed. A locking-pin 28, Fig. 1, operated by lever 32 and cam 55 on bevel-wheel 24, holds the turret in its indexed positions. A compression spring 36, Fig. 2, for moving the turret away from the work after the forward feed movement, is retained at one end in a recess in the stationary turret-slide guideway 37, and its free end abuts a shoulder 39 on a slidable cylindrical member 48. The latter engages a pin 49, extending through a slot 50 in the turret slide, from the rack 12.
