Abstract
834,670. Valves. BRODIE CO., R. N. Nov. 8, 1956, No. 34188/56. Class 135. A shut-off valve comprises a valve body 6 having an inlet chamber 7 and an outlet chamber 8, flow from the inlet chamber to the outlet chamber being controlled by a piston 17 movable within a cylinder 10, which is seated within the body 6 to communicate with the inlet chamber 7 through an open inner end and with the outlet chamber through ports 12 in the cylinder wall. The piston is urged to a port closing position by a spring 21 and is arranged to be moved to and from a port closing position by subjecting its inner end to inlet or outlet pressure by means of a control valve 30 located in the cylinder head. The valve either admits inlet pressure to the upper end of the cylinder via tube 42 and passages 41<SP>1</SP>, 41, 34, 341, 3411 or exhausts the cylinder to outlet pressure via passages 34<SP>11</SP>, 341, 34, 35, 35<SP>1</SP>, 36. The rate of movement of the piston can be regulated by adjustable restrictors in the fluid passages 41<SP>1</SP> and 351. The cylinder, piston and control valve assembly can be removed from the valve body as a unit for repair and replacement. The control valve may be actuated manually by a lever 45 or it may be actuated by hydraulic or pneumatic pressure or by a solenoid or by any other conventional means.
