Abstract

1,3 - bis - methacrylamido - 2 - propanol is prepared by acylating 1,3-diamino-2-propanol with methacrylyl chloride in the presence of aqueous potassium carbonate at 0-5 DEG C. Specifications 600,023, 741,294, 741,441, 741,470, 792,840 and 807,948 are referred to.ALSO:A photopolymerizable composition which is substantially transparent to actinic light comprises 10 to 60% by weight of an addition polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compound having a boiling-point above 100 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure, 90 to 40% by weight of a neutral, non-ionizable polyvinyl alcohol ether, ester or acetal in which at least 70% of the structural units are vinyl alcohol units, which has a molecular weight of at least 5000 and which is soluble in water at 25 DEG C. to an extent of at least 2% by weight, and 0.01 to 5% (based on the weight of the unsaturated compound) of an addition polymerization initiator p which is essentially compatible with the other ingredients of the composition and is activatable by actinic light but is not activatable thermally at temperatures below 80 DEG C. Unsaturated compounds specified are esters and amides of acrylic and methacrylic acids, particularly esters of these acids with polyhydric alcohols and esteramides of such acids, blends of styrene with diethyl maleate or fumarate, methyl and beta-hydroxyethyl vinylbenzoates, divinyl terephthalate, divinyl benzene-1,3-disulphonate, divinyl butane-1,4-disulphonate and alpha-vinyl crotonaldehyde. Of the polyvinyl alcohol derivatives listed preferred is a partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate. Photoinitiators specified are diactyl, benzil, benzoin, pivaloin, benzoin methyl or ethyl ethers, alpha-methyl benzoin and alpha-allylbenzoin. The compositions may also contain compatible preformed polymers and fillers such as polyvinyl acetate and butyrate, polyvinyl formal and butyral, polyvinyl sorbate and sorbal, polyglyceryl phthalate and maleate, polymeric ethylene glycol and oxide, gelatin, starch, dextrin and casein and bentonite, silica and powdered glass. In the example a composition comprising polyvinyl acetate hydrolysed to the extent of 86 to 89%, 1.3-bis-methacrylamido-2-propanol and benzoin methyl ether is cast into a film and photopolymerized by exposure to light from mercury vapour lamps.
