Abstract
833,932. Telescopic stays; hinges and pivots. SCHONITZER, R. I. Dec. 9, 1957 [Jan. 23, 1957], No. 38173/57. Classes 65 (1) and 65(2) A stay for use between hinged structures comprises longitudinally movable link members and has a pawl carried by one of the members and pawl-engageable control elements carried by another of the members, the pawl and the control elements being arranged so that the structures can be opened to a first open position, where they are held against further opening by the engagement of the pawl with a control element, and after a short movement back in the closing direction to effect disengagement of the pawl and the control element may be opened to a second open position greater than the first open position. The stay is described when fitted to the rear door of a truck to permit the door to be retained in the 90 or 180 degrees open positions, the hinging of the door being such that in both these positions the weight of the door urges it to move away from the closed position. The stay comprises a channel section member 32 having a pivoted control pawl 35 and slidable within a second channel section member 33. The flanges of member 32 are apertured to permit the first and second control fingers 63, 64 and the stop finger 65 of the pawl to protrude therefrom, when so positioned, while a stop 69 (see Fig. 7), raised from the web of member 32 limits the rotation of the pawl. The member 33 carries a stop pin 77 at one end and a stop 80 at the other, the flange of the member being apertured to provide at the extremities of the apertures the stop faces 71, 74 and 75. The action of the stay is as follows. When the door is fully 180 degrees open (see Fig. 5), the pawl 35 on the member 32 and the stop 77 on the member 33 abut to prevent the door from opening further. As the door closes the stay approaches its minimum length position, the stop 80 rotates the pawl clockwise to project the control fingers 63, 64. Further closing of the door lengthens the stay, when the stop 74 (see Fig. 12), contacts the finger 63 and passes over it to rotate the pawl further clockwise to position 35d, see Fig. 7, retracting the control fingers and projecting the stop finger 65. On opening the door the stay is free to extend until the 90 degrees open position is reached when the stop finger 65 abuts the stop face 71. Partial movement of the door in the closing position causes the member 33 to move to the left relative to member 32 when stop face 75 engages the finger 63 to rotate the pawl anti-clockwise to retract all the fingers, when the door opening movement can be resumed.. At the 180 degrees open position the stop pin 77 again abuts the pawl to limit further extension of the stay and hence the opening movement of the door. Pivots. The stay is flexibly pivoted at either end to brackets 29, 30 on the door and body respectively by pivot pins each comprising a rivet passing through a clearance hole in the corresponding bracket, (Fig. 14, not shown), a spring washer being disposed between the bracket face and the rivet head. In a modification in which the stay is inverted and reversed end to end the member 33 is pivoted to a bracket 92 (Fig. 20, not shown), having a stop 94 which engages the member when the door is fully open.
