Abstract
Tungsten compounds are reduced using potassium silico-tungstenate of the formula K4SiW12O40, with or without water of crystallization, as "dope". The starting product, e.g. ammonium para-tungstenate, may be soaked in the "dope", which may contain some aluminium nitrate, prior to reduction in a single stage with hydrogen and tungsten. In an example, ammonium para-tungstenate is soaked in a "dope" in an enamelled cup provided with a steam jacket the mass being continuously stirred until the water has evaporated. The proportion of dope to ammonium para-tungstenate is such as to give 4.6 grammes K4SiW12O10 and 0.06 grammes Al per 100 grammes tungsten. After drying, reduction is carried out in a single stage in a horizontal tubular furnace divided into sections at 750, 800 and 825 DEG C. A boat of 500 grammes ammonium para-tungstenate travelled through the furnace in 3/4 hour, and a powder with an average grain size of 2-4 microns was produced.
