Abstract

833,127. Magnetic drum data-storage apparatus. FERRANTI Ltd. Jan. 22, 1958, No. 2111/58. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group XXXIV] A magnetic drum for data storage having a frusto-conical outer surface and an inner cylindrical bore closed at one end by which it is guided, by means of a gas bearing, on a vertical cylindrical mount with the end of greater diameter uppermost, is moved upwardly if and when the gas pressure in the bearing falls below a predetermined value. The arrangement is such that the clearance between the outer surface of the drum and the reading and/or recording heads is rendered greater than the clearance between the inner surface of the drum and the mount so as to prevent the possibility of contact between the heads and the drum. In the arrangement shown, the drum 12 is driven by a motor 21a through a friction clutch 1.2a. The drum is supported by the clutch and is guided relative to the cylindrical mount 10 by air passing through apertures 18 from a chamber formed between the cylinder 10, an inner cylinder 17 and rings 16, and supplied by a line 14. The air is also supplied from the line 14 to a cylinder 21 in which moves a piston 22 on the motor shaft. The pressure is normally sufficient to hold the motor and drum in depressed operative position, but if the pressure falls, a spring 24 raises the motor and drum until a stop 25a engages the top wall of the cylinder 21. The drum is then unable to contact the heads 20 as a result of lateral movement on its mount. Specification 778,112 is referred to.
