Apparatus for delivering the output of a cigarette making machine into collecting trays includes a filling tube which is raisable from a position adjacent the bottom of a tray as the level in the tray rises, the tray being horizontally reciprocated so that the cigarettes are spread by the tube in layers along its length. Cigarettes are fed by a belt 1 to accummulate against a stop 3 and are allowed by a control cylinder 11 to pass one by one down the tube 8, The tube comprises a portion 13 slideable on the main portion and raised step by step automatically as the level of cigarettes rises in the tray. The outlet from the tube 13 is controlled by a gate- 33. A tray of the open-sided type is fed in sideways to the position of, Fig. 3, the gate 33 is opened and the tray, supported on a wheeled carriage 39, moves to the right so that a layer of cigarettes is distributed on its base. It then moves to the left and so on until filled, the tube 13 rising until the gate 33 is tripped shut. A pusher plate, Figs. 1, 2 and 5 (not shown), rises beneath the filled tray and ejects it sideways and returns to place an empty one in its place. The apparatus described is arranged for filling two trays side by side simultaneously.
