Abstract

831,474. Firearms. SULLIVAN, G. C. April 9, 1957, No. 11592/57. Class 119 A firearm with a bolt mechanism has the receiver made of aluminium alloy and a barrel liner, sleeve or breech nut is made of a material of higher strength than aluminium alloy and is provided with locking lugs co-operating with locking lugs on the bolt for locking the bolt mechanism to the barrel. The bolt mechanism may be made of aluminium alloy with its lugs made of a material of higher strength than aluminium alloy or the bolt mechanism may be made entirely of higher strength material. In one form, Fig. 1, a cartridge chamber liner 20 is made of carbon-nickel steel or carbon-nickel-chromium steel alloy and it extended rearwardly to form locking lugs 21 which co-operate with locking lugs 15 of the bolt mechanism 12. Alternatively the locking lugs 21a, Fig. 7, may be provided on a sleeve 20a surrounding the breech end of the barrel and co-operating with the locking lugs 15a of the bolt mechanism. The barrels 30, Fig. 1, and 30a, Fig. 7, may also be made of aluminium alloy. In another embodiment the locking lugs 21, Fig. 9, may be provided on a breech nut 20b screw-threadedly secured to a liner 20 extending the length of the barrel or in a modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), the breech nut 20b may be secured directly to the barrel 30b.
