Abstract

Alkyl esters of alpha-chloro-acrylic acid are prepared by splitting off hydrogen chloride from alkyl esters of alpha : beta-dichloropropionic acid at elevated temperature, using a small amount of a carboxylic acid, amide or imide or nitrile, amine, carboxylic acid or sulphonic acid as catalyst. The reaction may be carried out in liquid or gas phase. A polymerization inhibitor may be added to the reaction mixture. Halides of metals from the 2nd to 8th groups of the Periodic system may be used, in addition to the catalyst, since they effect a lowering of the reaction temperature. In examples, methyl alpha : beta-dichloropropionate is converted into methyl alpha-chloroacrylate by heating in the liquid or gas phase in the presence of the following catalyst, metal halides and polymerization inhibitors: N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, 2-pyrrolidone, quinoline, pyridine, phenothiazine, N-butyl-pyrrolidine, dimethyl-formamide or -acetamide, N - butyl - or N : N - dibutyl - formamide, phthalimide succinimide, adiponitrile, succininitrile, benzonitrile, N - methyl - or N : N - dimethyl - aniline, (N : N - diethyl) - 2-aminoethanol - 1, (N : N - diethyl) - 3 - aminopropanol - 1, m - chloroaniline and 2 - ethylhexanoic, mono -, di - and tri - chloroacetic, alpha : alpha - or alpha - beta - dichloropropionic, alpha- or beta-chloropropionic, alphachloro - n - butyric, beta - chloro - isobutyric, p - toluenesulphonic, p - nitrotoluene - o - sulphonic acid, benzoic, salicylic, o-chlorobenzoic, riccinic and adipic acids; cadmium chloride; phenothiazine, picric acid and hydroquinone.
