Abstract

<PICT:0830378/III/1> Nuclear fuel is produced by carbonizing a mixture of a hydrocarbon oil and fissile material in solution or suspension. A mixture containing one part of a solution of uranyl nitrate in tributyl phosphate to 49 parts of petroleum oil is passed through a tube 1 at a rate providing laminar flow over a carbon rod 4 maintained at 400 DEG C. by resistance heating. The uraniumimpregnated carbon is then graphitized by heating at 2500 DEG C. The oil may be fed to the tube 1 separately from the fissile material so that the distribution of fissile material may be adjusted. Thus the fissile rod may be coated with pure carbon to prevent leakage of fission products and prevent contact between fissile material and coolant. Specification 830,379 is referred to.
