Class 72 [Also in Group XI] A process of refining liquid melts comprises introducing the melt into a chamber which. is separated from a second chamber, in which is maintained a vacuum or a gas at reduced pressure, by a wall at least a part of which is permeable to the gas but not to the liquid. As shown, applied to the refining of a metal, the molten metal is placed in a crucible 1 the lower portion 2 of which is of gas permeable material. A vacuum is maintained in a chamber 4 surrounding the crucible and the temperature is maintained by a resistance heater 7. The crucible may be in the form of a tube of gas permeable material and may be arranged in a chamber divided into smaller chambers in each of which a different vacuum may prevail, Fig. 3 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 5, the apparatus is similar to Fig. 1 but the melt is in the outer chamber and the vacuum in the inner and a high voltage electrode 45 may be inserted into the vacuum chamber. The electrode may be an incandescent cathode maintained at such a high potential relative to the melt or crucible that gas emission from the melt is promoted. In a further modification Fig. 4 (not shown) the melt may form a short circuited induction ring. The melt may also be heated by passage of a current therethrough.
