829,690. Optical measuring apparatus. BRITISH RAYON RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, and COOKE, TROUGHTON & SIMMS Ltd. Jan. 15, 1958 [Oct. 18, 1956], No. 31685/56. Class 97(1) Apparatus for determining linear planar spacing in periodic structures comprises a lamp, a graticule and a projecting lens for projecting an image of the graticule on to a structure the spacings of which are to be measured, the graticule and projecting lens being adjustable to permit the spacings of the images of the indicia of the graticule to be varied to correspond to the spacings of the structure to be measured. As shown, a housing 10 has a transparent window 11 at its base and a lamp 15 in a casing 14 at its top to illuminate - via a condenser lens 16 - a graticule 20 in the form of a transparent plate bearing parallel lines and mounted in a carriage 19. An indicating member 24 fast with the carriage 19 co-operates with a scale 26 mounted on a member 27 carrying a projector lens 32 and movable vertically by a hand knob actuated wheel and pinion 28, 29. A triangular lamina 34 pivoted at 35 bears against a fixed roller 39 and a second roller 23 fast with the carriage 19 such that the latter is constrained to move with the lens 32 to provide always a sharp variable size image of the graticule on the structure 13 to be measured, the spacings of which are indicated upon the scale 26.
