828,757. Determining particle size distribution of materials. PILLSBURY MILLS Inc. Dec. 23, 1957, No. 39920/57. Class 106 (2). Apparatus for determining the particle size distribution of finely-divided material comprises a tube 10, the lower end of which is closed and is of reduced bore, a hollow member 16 forming a dispersing chamber and being of a suitable size to be removably inserted into the upper portion of the tube 10 and having a stop 18 to position its lower end a fixed distance below the top of the tube 10. The lower portion of the tube 10 is provided with graduations 10d, and the lower end of the member 16 has a dispersing screen 17 mounted thereon. In operation, a sedimentation liquid, e.g. benzine, is placed in the tube 10, the amount used being sufficient to reach to the lower end of the member 16 when this is inserted in the tube. The lower end of the member 16 is closed, e.g. by the operator's thumb, and is partially filled with the powder being tested, such as flour. The member 16 is then nearly filled by a suitable dispersing liquid, whose specific gravity should be slightly less than that of the sedimentation liquid, and the chamber shaken, the operator's finger closing the upper end. Thereafter, the thumb is removed and the member 16 inserted in the tube 10. The finger is then also removed and the member 16 withdrawn from the tube. The depth of powder settled at the bottom of tube 10 is noted at predetermined times and from this the particle size distribution can be calcuated. For particles of a size less than thirty microns, the tube 10 is placed in a centrifuge to speed the rate of settlement. In the case of materials such as clay, a high-speed electric mixer is used to mix the material and the dispersing liquid in the member 16. In this case the sedimentation liquid is distilled water and the dispersing liquid can be a solution of sodium silicate in water to which acetone has been added.
