Abstract
828,424. Speech transmission. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Sept. 4, 1958 [Sept. 4, 1957], No. 28430/58. Class 40 (4). For the transmission of speech over a channel limited to the range 0-4 kc. the band 4-8 kc. which contains important tonal components of most consonants is shifted to that range and transmitted with the normal 0-4 kc. speech band to a receiver where no further conversion takes place. In Fig. 4, the whole band 0-8 kc. is fed over parallel paths A, B, one containing a modulator 14 supplied with a carrier frequency of 8 kc. and the other an attenuator 13 giving the same attenuation as the modulator. The combined output passes through a lowpass filter 34 cutting off at 4 kc. The 4-8 kc. band is thus folded over the 0-4 kc. band. In Fig. 5 (not shown), the path B is restricted to the range 4-8 kc. and a carrier of 4 kc. is used, so that the 4-8 kc. band is shifted without inversion. In Fig. 6, the speech band passes through a gating circuit 37 and low-pass filter 38, the former being controlled by 8 kc. pulses so that the 4-8 kc. band is in effect modulated to produce a 0-4 kc. lower side-band. This arrangement is described more precisely with reference to Fig. 7 (not shown). Specification 142,115 is referred to.
