Abstract

828,304. Washing machines. ARMSTRONG & CO. Ltd., J., ROWE, E. J., and FEASEY, C. E. Feb. 28, 1956 [May 6, 1953], No. 12608/53. Class 138 (2). In a washing-machine of the end-loading type comprising a perforated cylindrical drum 4 mounted to oscillate or rotate in a chamber 1, liquor such as rinse water is distributed along the top of the drum during operation so that it falls through the perforations in the latter on to the clothes therein, and a weir over which liquor can spill to discharge from the chamber 1 to maintain a substantially constant level therein, is located near the bottom of the chamber. In the example shown the weir 20 is in the cylindrical wall of the chamber 1, and leads to a longitudinal trough 8 having a discharge pipe 9 to drain. A header pipe 13 provided with nozzles extends along the top inside the chamber 1. In an alternative arrangement the weir comprises an open-topped box 10 situated at the rear end of the chamber and provided with a drain pipe 11. The drum 4 has perforated beaters 14 and preferably imperforate scoops 15, 16. The machine may be provided with coupled delivery and waste cocks automatically controlled by a timer.
