Abstract

827,726. Supply systems for discharge lamps. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Dec. 28, 1956 [Jan. 17, 1956], No. 1524/56. Class 38 (4). In a circuit wherein a hot cathode discharge lamp 14 is supplied from a D.C. vibrator unit, the output transformer is arranged to supply both heating and discharge currents, also to have a high leakage reactance to dispense with the normal series choke. In the Figure a non- synchronous vibrator 2-5 fed from battery 1 is connected to a centre-tapped transformer winding 6, 7. To reduce the size of buffer condenser C3, it is fed at higher voltage from autotransformer winding 17. The secondary winding 9-11 comprises parts 10, 11 feeding heaters 12, 13, and the discharge current. The primary and secondary windings are wound on different parts of a three-limbed core 18 with magnetic shims 18d separating the two windings so that on starting, very little flux is carried by the shims, but on discharge commencing the magnetic leakage lowers the voltage across windings 9-11. In an alternative arrangement the primary and secondary windings are on different limbs of the transformer and an additional limb with an air gap is provided in place of the magnetic shims 18d.
