Abstract
A pigment comprises PbO, P2O5 and SiO2 in physico-chemical combination, such combination being brought about by calcination of the intimately mixed oxides. The oxides may be pebble-milled together before calcination; but the preferred method is to add a solution of a soluble phosphate to a slurry of silica and litharge, then de-water and calcine the solids portion of the slurry, the amount of litharge being in excess of that required to react with the P2O5 and the amount of silica in excess of that required to react with the excess PbO. There may be from 0.75 mol. to 7.5 mols. of SiO2 per mol. of PbO and from 1/8 to 1/2 mol. of P2O5 per mol. of PbO. Suitable starting materials are litharge, precipitated silica or ground quartzite, and phosphoric acid or monoor diammonium phosphate. The calcination step is effected at from 500 DEG to 850 DEG C.
