Abstract

826,872. Pressure gauges. LOUGHBOROUGH GLASS CO. Ltd. Jan. 29, 1958 [Feb. 6, 1957], No. 4068/57. Class 106 (2). A pressure measuring instrument comprises two vertical non- capillary tubes 1, 2, connected by a valve or constriction 8 at their lower ends and connected at their upper ends, these tubes enclosing an inverted U-tube 5 open at each end and extending substantially the length of the tubes 1, 2, at least one branch 3 of the U-tube being a capillary, and the lower portions of the tubes 1, 2, the U-tube 5 and the valve 8 being filled with liquid. To fill the apparatus, it is evacuated through a cock 6 and then filled with mercury. It is then re-evacuated and air allowed to enter slowly, thus driving the mercury into the U-tube 5. Cock 6 is then closed and the apparatus tilted so that most of the mercury runs into tube 2, and then turned upright, valve 8 being closed, so that the mercury fills the U-tube 5 completely. When measuring pressures lower than atmospheric, the mercury in tube 5 splits, forming a vacuum and the difference in height between the mercury in tubes 1 and 2 and in the U-tube 5 is a measure of the required pressure.
