Abstract

826,737. Transmission systems. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 25, 1955 [Nov. 30, 1954], No. 33837/55. Class 40 (4). Primary loud-speakers 2, 3, 4 and additional loud-speakers 5, 6, 7 are arranged round the edges of a space 1 and are supplied with signals from corresponding individual soundtracks and pick-ups 2a-7a, Fig. 2 (not shown); all the loudspeakers receive substantially the same signals but with different timbres and/or intensities, and the signals supplied to the additional loud-speakers are suitably delayed with respect to those supplied to the primary loud-speakers in order to prevent localization of the virtual sound image at the nearest loud-speaker to the listener. The delays may be produced in recording and/or by staggering the pick-ups and may be chosen so that for a listener in any position there is no directional effect, or so that at least part of the virtual sound image is localized at the primary loud-speakers 2, 3, 4 which may be arranged to produce a stereophonic effect.
