Abstract

In using a motor-driven processing machine of the kind in which a container for the material to be processed is charged with the material whilst the container is moving, the machine is driven, before the charging operation begins, at a known speed, and the fall in speed whilst the container is being charged is supervised, and is used as a measure of the extent to which the container is filled. In one example the centrifuge is driven by a motor to which is attached a tachometer dynamo, the output voltage of the latter being applied to a speed-measuring relay so that when, after switching on, the motor speed reaches 200 r.p.m., the relay switches off the motor and opens a slide gate to release material to be centrifuged and permit charging of the container. The machine and motor rotor slow down owing to inertia and to the influx of material, and at a second speed value (e.g. between 100 and 180 r.p.m.), the relay closes the slide gate and energises the motor again for initiation of processing. In an alternative the driving motor is successivley de-coupled from and re-coupled to the centrifuge instead of being switched off and on, the speed-measuring apparatus being connected to the centrifuge. For situations where there is low inertia of moving parts or considerable friction, or both, the motor is run at reduced power during the charging operation instead of being switched off or decoupled.
