Abstract
Forged non-graphitic steel blooming, slabbing and break-down rolls of diameter greater than 500 mm. are formed of an alloy steel having a composition within the following range in per cent by weight .C.0.4-1.25 .Mn.0.2-2.0 .Ni.0.4-1.7 .Si.0.3-1.5 .Mo.0.15-0.8 .Cr.0-3.5 .V.0-0.6 Fe, and impurities the remainder, the total amount of Mn an V not exceeding 2.5 and the Mo being replaceable wholly or in part by an amount of W twice that of the amount of Mo replaced. The steel may also contain up to 0.5% each of one or more of Cu, Ti or Al. The steel is heat-treated after forging by annealing at a high temperature (e.g. 700 DEG C.) and slow cooling at a rate such as to ensure stress-relieving of the roll body.
